Get “On Board” with 3 Easy Steps

An effective onboarding process can mean the difference between long term retention or an employee’s quick exit.  Reducing costly turnover will have a direct impact on your bottom line.  Address these areas to take your onboarding process to the next level!

1.  First Day: Introduce new hires to the owner, coworkers, and employees that will be essential to their success.

2.  Consistent Feedback: Have supervisors meet with new hires frequently. Weekly overview meetings for the first month, and monthly meetings for the first six-months are recommended.

3.  Tools of the Trade: Provide essential tools that are needed to work effectively on the first day. Work station, computer, and business cards should be ready.

Onboarding Beyond Product Knowledge

The transition from “candidate” to “employee” is one of the most influential times you have with your new team member.  Like students on the first day of school, new employees are excited and their minds are fresh.  Use this time effectively to educate in areas beyond product knowledge.

3 Overlooked Onboarding Areas:

Industry Standards: Provide trade journals, industry websites, and other materials.

Company Culture: Set up informal meetings with coworkers and encourage discussions on “how things work” in your business.

Personal Development: Tap into new employees’ excitement as a springboard to top performance using web-based continuous learning.

Safari Interview Tip

Ask candidates, “How did your last employer get you up to speed on your job?” Don’t be surprised if candidates roll their eyes and remark, “I had to figure it out by myself.” If so, ask what training they wish they had received to get an understanding of the depth of desired training they would expect from you.

Answer to Today’s Dos and Don’ts

Can you ask new employees about their personal life?

Yes, once an employee is on your team there are no laws regarding what can and cannot be discussed.  Develop rapport through common sense relationship building efforts.  Yet, be aware of different communications styles as some individuals will be more comfortable opening up than others.  And, be careful not to create a hostile work environment with questions that could lead to accusations of harassment.  Nor should you take any actions regarding their employment status (promotions, terminations) based on information you learn about their race, religion, or gender.
