Talent Redefined
Small businesses may believe they can not afford top talent, but this is only true if their definition of top talent is narrowly defined as “highly experienced.” Depth of skills required for a given position does not define “A” from “B” players. Entry-level does not necessarily mean “B” player, nor does the lack of specific industry experience mean “B” player.
Redefine top talent by identifying top performance expectations based on the parameters that fit your business today. For example, a start-up software development company might only be able to afford a $35k programmer. This pay level translates into entry-level. If entry-level is all you can afford, then hire the best entry-level programmer you can find by clearly defining “A” performance for an entry-level role.

Top 2 Performance Criteria
Everyone covets the “A” Player. Unfortunately, many hiring managers begin a search without defining “A” performance for the role. So, how can you find what you are looking for if you don’t know what it looks like? Two key factors determine the qualifications of an “A” player for your team.
1. Key Accountabilities: What do you want the person in the role to do? As a guide, use our Position Performance Profile to help you craft clear performance expectations.
2. Level of Expertise: Availability of capital, compensation requirements, maturity of your business, career growth opportunities, and depth of management experience are primary drivers that affect the level of skills required.

Answer to Today’s Dos and Don’ts
If a particular gender tends to do better in a specific role, can they be given preference during the recruitment process?
No, discrimination laws protect everyone, male and female, from being discriminated based on gender. Instead of focusing on gender, identify the traits and behaviors that fit the position. Consider conducting assessments to obtain an unbiased view, rather than relying on assumptions.
